The Dangers of Fine Dust, Ozone, Smog and Air Pollution

Why smog, ozone and air pollution is bad for your health and what you can do to protect yourself.

According to The New York Times, air pollution due to fine dust, ozone and smog have a much bigger influence on our daily lives than initially expected apart from various health issues that come along with polluted air. Some of these health issues are for instance:

  • irritated respiratory systems
  • reduced lung functions
  • increased chance of asthma
  • increased risk of cancer

Currently, many cities in China are suffering ozone and smog levels that are far higher than usually bearable for a human being, but also for mother nature. As stated in this article: In Anyang, Henan Province, the air quality index read 999 at 3 p.m. (which is three times as worse than in Beijing and so the top of the scale). In Handan, in Hebei Province, it wasn’t much better, here the air quality index read 822. And in the same province, the city of Shijiazhuang(a bit closer to Beijing) they registered 460.

By United States standards, anything above 300 is “hazardous,” meaning people should stay indoors. In the year 1999, the United States Environmental Protection Agency already warned about the hazardous effects of smog and ozone!

Apart from the negative health influences, further disruptions to our daily life and economic losses can be expected. It appears that Beijing’s mayor and his colleagues took the extraordinary step of issuing a red alert, which took effect Tuesday, as a rejoinder to widespread criticism of their inaction during the last bout of severe smog. “That occurred as Chinese leaders were arriving in Paris for the start of climate change talks on Nov. 30, and global news reports and photographs of the bad air were an embarrassment for officials”, Mr. Wang said.

Fine Dust & Air Pollution: What can be done to protect your Home and Work Space

In times of increasingly polluted living areas and urban spaces, it’s essential to clean the air we live in; outside but especially inside! By this, we can make sure to reduce the levels of fine dust and other air pollution in our work spaces, offices and also at home.

Probably contradictory to what most people might think, most of our exposure to environmental pollutants occurs by breathing the air indoors. Here, fine dust and pollution come from activities, products and materials we use every day. The air in our homes, schools and offices can be 2 to 5 times more polluted, and in some cases 100 times more polluted than outside!

People Spend 90 Percent of Their Time Inside

Therefore, indoor air quality is a significant concern, because when we add up the hours spent sleeping, working in our offices or at school, people spend on average the vast majority of their time indoors where they are repeatedly exposed to indoor air pollution and high levels of fine dust. Furthermore, it’s estimated that the average person receives 72 percent of their chemical exposure at home, which means that the very places most people consider the safest paradoxically exposes them to the greatest amounts of potentially very hazardous pollutants.

At AXP we believe that proper air purification represents a great solution to manage dangerous air pollution and protect our health. The EAS1300 air purifier is a patented innovation with a unique combination of air displacement and filtration. The product has an extremely high capacity and takes care of all kinds of pollution you can imagine. Research by TNO (an independent Dutch research institute) has shown that exposure to damaging components decreases with 99% in spaces where the EAS1300 is used. Thus, the air purifier is developed for intensely polluted areas and gets the job done!

Air Pollution Kills 3 Million Every Year, Figure Could Double In Coming Years, Study Finds

    Air Pollution

According to TechTimes, the latest developments in worldwide air pollution is causing more than three million premature deaths around the world every year, and the figure could be double that by the year 2050, a study suggests.

Pollutants including ozone and fine dust particulate matter — particles so small they’re invisible to the naked eye — contribute to lung disease, heart disease and other serious health problems around the globe, researchers say.

Around three-quarters of the annual 3.3 million deaths occur in Asian, they note, with outdoor air pollution killing 1.4 million people annually in China and 650,000 in India.

“Strokes and heart attacks are responsible for nearly 75 percent of air pollution-related mortality,” says Jos Lelieveld, an atmospheric scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Germany and lead author of the study published in the journal Nature.

“They’re so small that they can actually get deep into the lungs, into the alveoli, and get into your bloodstream,” stresses New York University professor of population health and environmental medicine George Thurston, who was not involved in the study.

“These tiny chemical particles we breathe can get past the body’s immune system and penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream, and they are not naturally removed from the body’s airways,” he argues.

AXP proud exhibitor at commercial fairs

Last week Extreme Air Products proudly presented its products and services at the technical facility exhibition in Den Bosch, as well as the International Amusement Industry Fair in Düsseldorf, Germany. During this dynamic week, AXP was able to enjoy valuable interaction with many different customers and contacts.

Two years ago, the IMA in Düssedorf, Germany was a first time appearance for our company. During this commercial fair, Extreme Air Products was able to introduce the products and services to the International Casino and Amusement industry with great success. Even though Germany has different rules and regulations within their 16 federal states, each one of them has still issues concerning smoking areas.

This year, we are happy to be back in Düsseldorf! The casino and amusement industry changed vividly in those two years and there numerous smoking areas and rooms where we’ll be glad to play a positive role in. Just as the previous edition, our customers purchased our show model air purifier from the spot.

In Den Bosch in the Netherlands, Extreme Air Products is definitely a major player. Smoking remains a major issue for the office- and health facility industry. As smoking outside isn’t always an option, Extreme Air Products is known to be the only expert when it comes to the cleaning of smelly and dirty smoking rooms.

After a dynamic week of commercial fairs we are happy to be helping our new customers with keeping their smoking rooms and cabins clean and fresh!

        fijnstof

Bad air quality indoors is closely linked with asthma and, in 2008/09, 1.1 million working days were lost in the UK alone due to respiratory problems, yet IAQ (Good indoor air quality) inside lags far behind that of outdoor air quality on the public and business agenda. David Nicholls, Director at Desso, looks at the impacts.

The World Health Organisation’s (WHO) latest research published in March 2014 paints a chilling picture of the effects of poor air quality and shows that in 2012 alone seven million people died as a result of exposure to indoor and outdoor air pollution, that is one in eight of total global deaths. The new WHO data also reveals a stronger link between both indoor and outdoor air pollution exposure with cardiovascular diseases, such as strokes and coronary heart disease, as well as between air pollution and cancer. This is in addition to the link between air pollution and respiratory diseases including acute respiratory infections and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases. Despite this, there are currently still no regulations on the quality of indoor air in the UK, yet it has a crucial effect on our health and wellbeing and, as we spend on average more than 90 percent of our time indoors, good IAQ is of the upmost importance. To help tackle the issue on a business level, our business has launched an initiative we’ve called The Great Indoors, which bids to raise awareness, among other things, of the issues surrounding IAQ in the workplace, with a special focus on the problem of fine dust and its effect on respiratory problems. A part of the campaign is a survey conducted among HR professionals and supported by Asthma UK, which showed that 84.7 percent do not, or don’t know if they do, currently monitor for IAQ. This is a lost opportunity as a healthy indoor environment is good for both business and the individual. A Californian study by William Fisk from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory showed that improved indoor air quality can boost productivity by 0.5 to five percent per year in the U.S.
