On January 1, 2004, the right to a smoke free work place commenced. No longer smoking colleagues at our desk: they have to go outside to a designated smoking area. The image of smoking employees in front of the office doors is an unattractive sight for many organizations. It also tends to have a negative influence on productivity at the work floor; people have to go over a distance before they can fulfil their smoking needs. On top of this is the unwanted leak in security this can bring about, through people walking in and out of the building without supervision and control.

Smoking areas in offices must be separated from the rest of the work space, which cannot have any hindrance of the tobacco smoke. Many offices have poorly ventilated smoking areas, making the space smell bad and overall uncomfortable. With a limited and cost saving investment, these spaces will have huge increased functionality.

The smoking area in the well-known association Nieuwspoort in The Hague is separated from the rest of the association by a glass wall. During the opening performed by minister Ab Klink it already showed to be a comfortable place to smoke. Manager Steven Veenendaal: “Next to the smokers there was a fair share of non-smokers present in the smoking area. This could only have been possible thanks to the exceptional air purifying system that we have installed. We purchased two Extreme Air-Sensations. No one is bothered by the smoke thanks to this system. The area is a pleasant place, even for non-smokers”.

Veenendaal demonstrated the system in an intractable way. “At the opening, when the first speaker took his place, I completely filled the room with smoke using professional smoke machines. Within just 5 minutes, when the minister was about to perform the official opening, the smoke had disappeared and the air was clear again”, the manager smiles. “Everyone was exhilarated.”

Pro Industry

Pro Industry is a mediation company for employees in the technical sector, with offices in Breda and Rotterdam in the Netherlands. All intermediaries in Breda are smokers, but they cannot ignore the Dutch smoking ban. Their kitchen therefore is carefully closed off to create a smoking area.
